I have to be honest. This movie was very familiar to me; sometimes it was too familiar. I am part Navajo and many times as a kid my family would spend time in New Mexico to visit my dad’s family. I related to Benny (Kier Tallman} on many occasions, a Diné boy who’s grown up in San Diego, returning to a place and family he is not at all familiar with.
Benny is to stay with Grandma (Sara H. Natani) for the summer on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. She speaks only Diné and Benny does not. Soon he is joined by a cousin nicknamed Frybread Face (Charley Hogan). His uncle Marvin (Martin Seinsmeier) helps Grandma on her homestead with tending to sheep but has troubles of his own. Aunt Lucy (Kahara Hodges) comes by occasionally.
